Student Defense Commends ED Rulemaking Announcement and Calls on Cardona to Drop Defense of Trump and DeVos Policies
The Department of Education Runs the Risk of Inconsistent Positions By Continued Defense Of DeVos Deregulation Efforts
WASHINGTON, DC – Following the Department of Education’s announcement that it will conduct public hearings to start the Negotiated Rulemaking process for several higher education topics, Student Defense President Aaron Ament issued the following statement
“We commend the Department for starting a multi-year Negotiated Rulemaking process to tackle important issues facing higher education students and student loan borrowers,” said Student Defense President Aaron Ament. “But there is nothing stopping the Department from helping over 400,000 borrowers with disabilities right now, dropping its defense of the DeVos repeal of the Gainful Employment regulations, or fixing the flawed Public Service Loan Forgiveness system. Students and borrowers need immediate help and cannot afford to wait until 2023 or beyond for new policies to take effect.”
Student Defense published a series of memos in its 100 Day Docket initiative that addressed many actions the Department can take immediately through administrative authorities to improve many of the programs that are part of today’s announcements.
